Mary O'Donnell met Edward (Monty) Montague (1918-1997) at Lovell General Hospital in Fort Devens, Massachusetts in 1944. They married in 1946 and settled down to 52 years of family life in Syracuse.

Mary and Monty began married life in 1947 by moving into a Liverpool, NY, apartment building, known affectionately as "the funny farm." In 1950 they moved on to their first home near the Belleview Country Club (on Juneway Drive, just off Winkworth Parkway).

By 1954, with the birth of the fifth child, John Michael Montague, the Juneway home had become just a a titch cramped. Mary and Monty closed a deal on a new house around the block on Winkworth parkway, and received a good offer to sell the Juneway house, but their was a slight problem: their newly purchased home wasn't yet built. So they moved all and sundry into a one-year rental home on Summit Ave near Most Holy Rosary, where Tom, Jim, and Jerry attended elementary school.

The Montague's finally moved in 1956 to what would be their home for the next 31 years, the house on Winkworth Parkway.
