James Holmes Montague, second son of Monty and Mary Montague, was born in 1948 in Syracuse. At the age of twelve Jim was a champion swimmer, winning the 1960 Greater-Syracuse City-County 50-meter breast-stroke championships in two different age categories on the same day (11-12 and the year-older 13-14).

A 1966 graduate of Bishop Ludden High School, Jim received his college degree in 1970, majoring in accounting at Stonehill College. He followed his older brother Tom into the U.S. Marine Corps, finishing six years of active reserve duty (1970-1976).

Jim worked his way up the ranks in accounting, holding management positions with Price-Waterhouse, Ithaca Gun, and Miller Brewing (1970-1975). He completed a year of graduate work at Syracuse University's Graduate School of Business (1975). Jim left Miller in 1976 to serve as Comptroller for Grumman Boats in Cortland, and later, for Gutchess Lumber in Cortland. In 1985, Jim joined with his uncle Frank Clark to open their own own tax and business consulting company, Clark-Montague Associates, Inc., which Jim continues to operate today.
Bethany Gordon, daughter of Ron and Mary Gordon, was born in 1953 in Lowville, New York. She received her B.S. in accounting from SUNY-Oswego in 1975. Beth met Jim in her first job at Miller Brewing in Fulton. It was, as they always say, love at first sight. They married in 1978.

Jim and Beth raised four children (the twins Katie and Mike, Patrick, and Mary). Today, Beth is the Parish Business Manager at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Syracuse. She also manages book-keeping for several local businesses, and serves as treasurer for the Drumcliffe School of Irish Dance. All the while, she enjoys running, hiking, and camping. The twins are recent college grads (Katie from University of Rochester, 2000, and Mike from Boston College, 2000). Katie is now a full-time grad student at New York University, and Mike is attending Pfish concerts. Patrick is a full-time art student at Syracuse University, and Mary is a sophomore at Corcoran High School.
