John Michael Montague, born in 1954 in Syracuse, was the fourth son (and fifth child) of Monty and Mary Montague. He attended St. Ann's Elementary School, and graduated high school from Christian Brothers Academy in 1972. From an early age, John loved trees in general, and gardens and parks in particular. He enrolled in 1972 at the State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) at Syracuse. He graduated in 1977 with a degree in landscape architecture following a one-year European internship in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
For a man who grew up in Syracuse, John was surprisingly not fond of snow. He moved - lock, stock and barrel - to Oakland, California in 1977. Once there, he began working for the East Bay landscape architect John Su. In 1979 he joined Singer & Hodges Landscape Architects, Inc. John became a masterful and imaginative park designer, winning several major awards for his work. In 1987-1988, he taught as an adjunct professor at the University of California-Berkeley program in landscape architecture.
As the result of a tragic auto crash near Stockton, California, John passed on in 1988; all the Montagues continue to cherish his memory.
