Using 'Secret Password' FiltersUsing an e-mail filter with a 'Secret Password' allows you to block ALL messages being sent to a particular e-mail address UNLESS that message contains your personalized Secret Password in the body. This is the best possible technique for blocking SPAM, minimizing the amount you receive by up to 99.9%. It is not always appropriate, but when possible we highly recommend it. It ensures the messages you receive are from a human being, and not from a machine spewing mass-generated, impersonal advertisements. Creating a Filter with a Secret Password First, determine what your Secret Password will be. We recommend something like "ThisIsNotSpam123". It should be something more complicated than your company or personal name (which many SPAM messages will contain), yet also something you do not mind sharing with your customers, friends or acquaintances. They will need to use it to send an e-mail message to you. Do not use passwords you may already have in place elsewhere. This password is to be shared.
Result Any e-mail message sent to this address will be automatically deleted unless it contains your Secret Password in the body of the message. You must now tell anyone you agree to receive messages from to include this Secret Password in their e-mail communications to you. Using Bounce Accounts It may not be possible for you to let everyone know of your Secret Password in advance. Further, there may be people whom you have never met who have a legitimate reason for writing to you. To accommodate this need, we recommend the use of a Bounce Account. With Bounce Accounts, rather than the message being deleted, it is 'bounced back' to the Sender, with an explanation of your Secret Code included. If it is a message from an actual person, they have the chance to reply - with your Secret Password. Please reference Using Bounce Accounts for instructions. Using Friendly Domains If you receive newsletters, or have relationships with vendors or online stores who may send you automated messages (that won't have your Secret Password in them) you will want to add these domain names to your Friendly Domain list. Messages from these sources will be excluded from your Secret Password filter. Please reference Adding Friendly Domains for Instructions. Filter Further by Using your Secret Password in Form If you have a website, you may also choose to create a on-line e-mail form with a "hidden field" containing the Secret Password. When people e-mail you using that form, you will receive their message since the Secret Password is automatically included. SPAM is generally not propagated through people filling out forms, but rather through generic mass mailings. You can also send a link to this form in the "Bounce Account" auto-response.
