Part 2.  Our Family Tree

In the charming little village of Cazenovia, in the year of Our Lord 1856, a notable wedding took place. It didn't make headlines or cause a social stir but it was very important to us. The St. James Church records show that in that year - William Burke and Johanna Dwyer were united in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony.

William Burke in 1909

Johanna's mother had brought her young brood from Thurles, County Tipperary, to America. Her father's farm had been seized by British agents - and, like the Trapp family, this young Irish mother and her children had to seek refuge in a new land.

Our Grandpa Burke also left his native land to try to have a better life in the new world. He had a married sister living in New York City. For a short time he stayed with Margaret and her husband John Purcell. However, he preferred rural life to city life, so he ventured westward until he found the ideal spot and settled in Cazenovia. There he met Johanna and there they were married and made their home until they bought the farm at the top of Fenner Hill.
