Creating a Bounce Account
with an
Auto-response (for Use with
Filters)
Bounce accounts automatically
send a note back to the Sender of a filtered message. Bounce accounts should
be created BEFORE the filter using it is activated. To create a bounce account:
-
Access your E-Mail Administration Interface using your Administrator ID
(e.g. root@yourdomain.com).
-
Create an email address (pop
account) called "bounce" (e.g.bounce@YourDomain.com)
- Exit the Interface.
- Login again to
the
newly create bounce account (e.g.
bounce@YourDomain.com).
-
Select "Edit Auto Response"
from the drop-down menu.
-
Enter bounce-NUL@YourDomain.com in the EMAIL field.
-
Enter your auto-response message in the "MESSAGE""
field (1024 characters maximum).
- Click the "Save" button.
- As always, test, test,
test!
Result
Any message rejected by your
filter will be returned to the Sender, with a new message from you. This
is called an 'auto-response'. If you are using the
Secret Password method, your auto-response
should contain your Secret Password, allowing the Sender a second chance to
contact you.
Tips for Composing an Auto-response
Message
You can use any of the following
variables in your auto response:
%s = "subject" of
the original message
%t = "To:" field header of original message
%m = entire original message (
including headers )
%h = header of original message
%b = body of original message
The first
line of the "MESSAGE:" field will become the title (i.e. subject line) of the
auto response. Variables are not
substituted in the Subject of your auto-response message.
